50% of Businesses Lack IT Headcount for Effective Cloud Support

“What do you want to spend your time doing: programming your infrastructure, or transforming your business?”

In the closing lines of her presentation at Rackspace:Solve New York City, IDC’s Melanie Posey asked that very question to the event’s many attendees. Noting that cloud is more than just infrastructure, one of the key messages of Posey’s presentation was centered on how companies can use managed cloud solutions to push their business forward.

Highlights from Posey’s presentation include the following IDC statistics, among other things:

  • 90% of apps developed today are being built to run in a cloud environment;
  • 29% of U.S. enterprises are “going cloud” for new IT resources; 34% look to cloud for replacement/upgraded resources;
  • 80% of companies are at least considering public or private cloud;
  • 50% of U.S. organizations lack the IT headcount for effective cloud support, and 45% have the headcount but not the expertise to run best practices

As cloud adoption continues to grow, all signs point to outsourced management as a viable option for companies making the jump. In fact, Posey notes that IDC expects the number of companies using an external provider for their infrastructure to increase from 31% this year to 41% in 2017. Clearly, as more companies are coming onboard the cloud, many of those same companies are realizing that they’re better served using an external provider than they are trying to manage in-house.

Many customers have found the same thing, opting to leverage the offerings of managed service providers to increase efficiency, or moving workloads to the public cloud to enable in-house IT staff to focus on core business challenges. Cloud isn’t a passing trend—it’s a real opportunity for businesses to grow. No matter who your cloud provider is or what your business needs are, however, the question Posey asks is a good one.

Many organizations lack the IT headcount for effective cloud support. With that, we ask which option makes more sense: building out a team to try to figure out the challenges surrounding effective cloud support, or partnering with a managed cloud provider who will allow you to focus on your core competencies and grow your business?
